Laser welding technology of automotive

The introduction of National Six standards in the automobile industry has spawned a large number of injection parts of the fuel system that need to use laser for welding, such as the welding of the most typical oil and gas separator, the welding of various fuel lines and plastic joints, the welding of silencer, the welding of various combination valve bodies and the welding of valve bodies such as check valves.
In summary, the plastic laser welded parts of the above fuel systems are mainly made of two materials: nylon with glass fiber and POM material. These two kinds of plastic materials are all kinds of laser plastic welding applications in the automotive industry for a long time to verify the material, as the laser welding material itself does not have any problems. The key points are as follows:
01 The plastic parts of the laser penetration layer should not be too thick in the weld area. The nylon material should be less than 2mm and the POM material should be less than 3mm. Too thick wall thickness will increase the difficulty of laser plastic welding process and significantly affect the welding speed.
02 If the laser penetration layer is the use of black laser penetrable plastic material, be sure to pay attention to the laser penetration rate of the plastic material in line with the standard, and in the injection process will not be doped into the ordinary black plastic material, before injection must use the same plastic material to clean the screw.
The laser welding of plastic parts of fuel system mainly adopts three different plastic laser welding processes: rotary profile welding, planar profile welding and quasi-synchronous welding.

1. Rotating profile welding
Rotary profile welding is used to weld fuel pipe fittings and pipe fittings joints. In the rotary profile welding of plastic laser welding, the laser head focuses on the laser to form light spots, and the pipe fittings rotate to weld.
In practical application, we found that some customers using low-end plastic laser welding equipment, in order to get a relatively wide weld, in the process of plastic laser welding through synchronous movement of the motion axis to achieve a wider weld, if this method is used is low-end laser, welding defects are easy to occur in mass production.
There are many different types of plastic laser welding methods of rotary profile welding, which are mainly divided into rotary laser welding of fuel pipe fittings and stationary laser welding of fuel pipe fittings.
2 Plane profile welding
Planar profile welding is used to weld planar welds, which is a standard process of plastic laser welding. In the welding process, the laser head focuses the light spot, and the laser head is hung on the moving platform or robot along the weld sequence to complete the welding.
In practical applications, contour welding has higher quality requirements for injection parts, especially for applications with complex welding lines such as oil and gas separators. Contour welding in the process of plastic laser welding can achieve a certain depth of welding line, but the depth is small and uncontrollable, which requires that the deformation of injection parts can not be too large.
3 Quasi-synchronous welding
Quasi-synchronous welding is one of the most widely used laser plastic welding processes in the automotive industry. In the process of quasi-synchronous welding, the welding rib can have a relatively large penetration, so it can compensate for certain deformation of injection parts, and the quality requirements of injection parts are slightly lower.
For the application of plastic laser welding of fuel system, no matter which of the above welding methods is used, we need to pay great attention to the design of welding bars of welding products. The design of welding bars and products that meet the technical requirements of laser plastic welding can make the future process development process much simpler.
