1. New body material
With the development of automobile industry, in order to save energy and safety, a large number of new materials are used in the body. The structure material of body gradually develops from single steel structure to high strength and high quality steel structure, and then to light alloy and composite material structure.
(1) High-strength steel The use of high-strength steel has presented new challenges to the welding process. Due to the narrowing of the plastic temperature range due to the properties of high strength steel, a larger electrode pressure is required to obtain the same plastic deformation, resulting in a narrower range of suitable welding processes. Usually through improving and optimizing traditional spot welding process, adopting pulse spot welding, intermediate frequency spot welding and other proprietary technologies, increasing welding pressure and controlling welding process, in order to obtain good welding quality.

In recent years, the rapid development of laser welding technology has greatly improved the welding performance of high strength steel plate and joint welding strength.
Because of its high strength, small rebound, good formability and good corrosion resistance, high strength steel has been successfully applied to the high strength functional parts of the body in white, such as A-B-C column reinforcement plate, threshold, seat, skeleton, bumper reinforcement plate, longitudinal beam, beam and so on. Hot stamping forming, intermediate frequency spot welding and laser welding are important means to realize the stamping forming and high quality welding of ultrahigh strength steel body parts.
(2) Light alloy materials In recent years, in order to further reduce the weight of the body, foreign automobile manufacturers began to use light alloy (aluminum alloy, magnesium alloy, even titanium alloy) in the body structure design, which brings a new subject to the body welding.
Aluminum alloy spot welding is more difficult, at present more cases or use TIG/MIG welding, or riveting /TOX connection method, or adhesive bonding method. British welding Institute, recently invented friction stir spot welding technology is said to solve the aluminum alloy body welding, get good welding strength, but because the friction stir spot welding center has a small hole, so it is often used on the internal bonding member.
(3) Carbon fiber composites In order to make the body lightweight, some automobile companies use carbon fiber reinforced polymer matrix composites to make the body and chassis parts, which can reduce the weight of the body by 50% to 65%. Some automobile developers have successfully used resin transfer molding process to produce carbon fiber bottom plate for cars. Carbon fiber composites are, of course, completely different from metal welding.
